Frappato - An Exceptional Native Red Wine from Southeastern Sicily

Frappato is a native Sicilian grape that’s quietly making a name for itself beyond the island’s shores. Grown primarily in the Vittoria region of southeastern Sicily, this variety is best known as the aromatic partner to Nero d’Avola in Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily’s only DOCG wine. But on its own, Frappato is just as compelling.

Light in body yet full of personality, Frappato offers vibrant notes of red cherry, wild strawberry, pomegranate and rose petal, often with a hint of spice or earthiness. It has fresh acidity, soft tannins, and a silky texture, making it an easy-drinking and highly versatile red. It’s particularly well-suited to being served slightly chilled—ideal for warm evenings or lighter meals.
Frappato has also become a favourite among natural wine producers, with winemakers like Arianna Occhipinti and COS showcasing its purity and sense of place through low-intervention methods.
If you’re a fan of Pinot Noir or Gamay, Frappato’s delicate charm and aromatic brightness make it well worth exploring—especially alongside dishes like grilled vegetables, tomato-based pasta, seafood, or roast chicken.
You can discover Frappato this month in July’s Brad’s Wine Subscription case—a perfect summer red to enjoy chilled.
