The Region and Its Climate
Valencia is globally renowned for its oranges, but the region's Mediterranean climate, with its long, warm days, also makes it perfect for viticulture. This combination of sun and proximity to the sea provides an ideal environment for growing a wide range of grapes.
The region is home to two main Denominations of Origin (DO): Valencia DO and Utiel-Requena DO, each offering distinctive and high-quality wines. These DOs reflect the diversity of the region’s terroir, contributing to the richness of its wine culture.
Key Grapes and Wine Characteristics
Valencia’s wines stand out for their diversity. The region blends local grape varieties with the Mediterranean climate to create wines with a unique character. A standout grape is Bobal, particularly known for its bold, full-bodied reds with deep fruit flavours and earthy notes. This grape is a perfect example of how the region balances tradition with modern winemaking techniques.
The wines of Valencia range from dry whites and rosés to rich reds. Moscatel de Valencia, a popular sweet wine made from Moscatel grapes, is another local speciality. Known for its floral and fruity profile, it offers excellent value for its high quality.
